Burt: Hey everyone, it’s Burt from ViewSonic again, and I’m back to answer your questions about your displays.

Burt: Today’s question is: How do I know if my USB Type-C ports support video out?

Burt: For USB-C to work you need two things: (1) a cable that can carry a video signal. And (2) a computer port that supports video out.

Super : Check the cable.

Burt: You need a cable that transmits data for video. A charging cable is built for power, while a video cable is built for data. Look for cables that are rated for video, at least USB-C 3.1 Gen 1.

Burt: Sorry, the USB-C cable that charges your phone probably won’t work. Your phone’s cable is designed to send power, not video signal.

Super : Check the port.

Burt: USB Type-C ports that are capable of video out are usually marked with a DP logo, a USB 4 logo, or a Thunderbolt logo. All USB 4/Thunderbolt ports can send video signals, but only some USB 3/3.1/3.2 ports can send video. These are usually marked with a DP logo. For a device that does not label their USB-C port, you may need to refer to the device’s documentation to confirm the port supports video out.

Super : Isolate the Problem Burt: Still not working? Try a different cable if you have one.

Burt: Or try connecting the monitor to another computer.

Burt: If you still have “no signal,” it’s likely a problem with your monitor. If that’s the case, contact ViewSonic for customer support.

Burt: Hope that helps. If you found this video to be helpful, please hit “Like” and we’ll continue creating videos like this. If you want to read more on this topic, check out our online user guides in the description below.
