Sean: Hey, I’m Sean from ViewSonic, and today’s frequently asked question is: Why are some options in my On-Screen Display or OSD Menu grayed out?

Sean: Many people have opened the OSD Menu to adjust their screen, but find that some options—like “Contrast” or “Auto Image Adjust”—aren’t selectable. This can be frustrating, but it’s usually the monitor doing its job! There are three common reasons for why this happens, and they all have quick fixes.

Super: “Contrast” and “Brightness” are Grayed Out

Sean: If “Contrast” or “Brightness” are grayed out, the most likely reason is that you’re using a preset picture mode from the “ViewMode” menu—like “Game” or “Movie.” The monitor has been pre-configured so that those settings give you the best picture for each usage type. It locks certain adjustments to ensure that best image quality stays intact.

Sean: The solution is to go back to the “ViewMode” menu and select “Standard” or “Custom.” This immediately unlocks the “Contrast” and “Brightness” menus. Also, if your monitor supports HDR, go to “Color Adjust” and turn “HDR” off as HDR also locks picture settings like brightness and contrast.

Super: “Auto Image Adjust” is Grayed Out

Sean: “Auto Image Adjust” is another option that confuses people because it only works with analog signals, or analog cables, sources, and inputs.

Sean: Back in my day, people used analog cables, like VGA. Analog signals drift, so people used “Auto Image Adjust” to re-center the picture on the screen. Today, everyone uses digital cables—like HDMI and DisplayPort. Digital connections automatically handle centering and picture quality.

Sean: So, why is the option grayed out? Because you're using a digital cable, “Auto Image Adjust” is disabled by design. The setting is still there for legacy support, just in case you want or need to connect via analog.

Sean: The quick solution here is: If you are still using a VGA cable, make sure that “DSub” is correctly selected in the “Input Select” menu. Otherwise, if you're using HDMI or DP, you can ignore that grayed-out option completely.

Sean: Now for the final troubleshooting step—the universal fix that solves nearly everything.

Super: How to Restore Default Settings

Sean: If you are still running into weird issues, or if something is locked that shouldn't be, it’s possibly time for a monitor factory reset. This returns every single setting back to its default value.

Sean: Before you do this, make sure you write down or save any personalized settings you’ve spent time customizing. Then, open the OSD, go to the “Setup” menu, and select “Memory Recall” or “All Recall.” Your monitor will be reset, and all settings will return to default.

Sean: And that’s it — those are the three most common causes of grayed-out OSD settings: Preset mode locking options, analog vs. digital input, and the factory reset that solves it all.
